Tides is now MakeWay!
June 23, 2020—Vancouver, BC: Recently Tides Canada changed its name to MakeWay. Tides Canada has been a quiet leader in environmental and social justice philanthropy in Canada for the last 20 years, and now the new MakeWay name reflects the momentum of change that Tides Canada has stood for.
20 years ago, a group of philanthropists and changemakers asked, “How can we foster a healthy planet and a just Canadian society?” Inspired by the model of the US-based Tides Foundation, this group of changemakers named this organization Tides Canada.
Tides Canada contributed to the historic Great Bear Rainforest agreements in BC. They also trailblazed the shared platform model in Canada that now hosts 60 community-led initiatives – which includes IndigenEYEZ.
The shared platform model provides governance, human resources, financial, and grant management for environmental and social projects across Canada, allowing projects, such as IndigenEYEZ, to more effectively achieve our missions. IndigenEYEZ is a project on the MakeWay shared platform, which supports on-the-ground efforts to create uncommon solutions for the common good.
In the past, Tides Canada held no legal, governance, or financial connection with Tides US, which has resulted in much confusion. Going forward as MakeWay, the mission is clear: MakeWay build partnerships and solutions to help nature and communities thrive together.
